Tom Nook is a prominent character in the Animal Crossing video game series. He is a tanuki, a Japanese raccoon dog, who plays a vital role in the player's town development.

Upon the player's arrival, Nook provides them with a house and a mortgage to be paid off. He initially runs the town's general store, Nook's Cranny (or its earlier iterations depending on the game), where players can purchase essential items like tools, furniture, and seeds.

As the player progresses, Nook's store expands and evolves, ultimately becoming a multi-level establishment called Nookington's or Nook's Cranny upgrades depending on the game. He employs various characters, such as Timmy and Tommy, who assist him in running the business.

Although often perceived as greedy due to his role as a lender, Tom Nook is generally considered a benevolent character. He provides opportunities for players to earn bells (the game's currency) and contributes significantly to the town's economic growth.
